What is the process for transferring?
Step 1
You must be formally admitted to OSU. For more information, see the Office of Undergraduate Admissions or the Graduate College.
Step 2
Your application packet will be forwarded to the ISS office and we will work with you to transfer your immigration record.
Step 3
You should inform the international student office at your current institution of your plans and have them complete the Transfer Request Form* from OSU. You should work with the DSO to determine the best date for your SEVIS record to be released to OSU. Your SEVIS record will not be released until you have completed your studies at your current institution. Your current institution may also have requirements that you must complete prior to the release of your SEVIS record.
*Transfer Request Form can be obtained here.
Step 4
When you complete your studies at your current institution and your SEVIS record is released, your immigration transfer may be processed. This is normally done when you arrive on our campus, however, if you are planning to travel outside of the U.S. during the break, you must inform us of your plans. You must receive a new I-20 from OSU before re-entering the U.S. You will not be allowed to re-enter the country with the I-20 from your previous institution.
When you arrive on the OSU campus, you should check in with the ISS office. We must have the following documents to process your transfer. If you have not already submitted them, you must bring them with you. When ISS has received your documents, your SEVIS record will be transferred to OSU and you will receive a new I-20 for attendance at OSU.
- Transcripts from all U.S. institutions that you have attended
- Final transcript from your current educational institution (reflecting the completion of your final semester)
- Original Financial Guarantee reflecting the ability to pay for at least one full year's expenses
- I-20 from your previous institution
- Transfer Request Form completed by a DSO at your current institution
- Verification of authorization for any periods of under-enrollment
Step 5
All new international students are required to attend orientation, even if you have already studied in the U.S. However, students who are transferring from another U.S. institution do not have to attend all of the orientation sessions. Transfer students are required to attend the Welcome, Legal, Health and Electronic Registration sessions. You will sign up for orientation when you check in with the ISS office. Click here for more information on orientation.
What if I plan to travel outside of the U.S. before I arrive at OSU?
Once you have completed your studies at your current institution, you will no longer be able to re-enter the country on the I-20 from their institution. If you decide to travel between the time you complete your studies at your current institution and begin your studies at OSU, you will need to receive your OSU I-20 before re-entering the country. In this case, you must notify our office and a DSO at your current institution of your plans. We will work with you to set your SEVIS release date and collect your documents so that we can issue your OSU I-20 prior to your arrival on campus. You may either collect your I-20 prior to leaving the U.S., or it can be mailed to your overseas address. It is very important that you make your plans well in advance to avoid any delays.
