FAQ’s for International Undergraduate Applicants

What is the deadline for application?

While there are no official deadlines for application materials we do suggest the following dates to ensure ample time to receive acceptance to OSU and your I-20. The Suggested dates are:

  • March 1 for Summer term (June)
  • May 15 for Fall term (August)
  • October 1 for Spring term (January)  

How long does it take your office to process the application and send notification of the decision?

Notification regarding the status of a student’s application is sent within approximately 5 working days from receipt of the application.  This notification will include instructions for submission of additional documentation, if needed in the decision process. The notification is sent via e-mail. 

What else is required in addition to the application?

Applicants are required to send their:

  • Undergraduate Application
  • $75.00 application fee in US dollars
  • Financial Guarantee
  • TOEFL or IELTS Scores
  • All educational documents including secondary and postsecondary transcripts  

What evidence of English proficiency is required for all applicants for whom English is a Second Language?

  • Official TOFEL Examination The Examination must have been taken within two years from the date of application. Information regarding the TOEFL examination can be found at the Educational Testing Service website: http://www.ets.org.

    Applicants may meet the English Proficiency requirements achieving the minimum required score on any following TOEFL examinations:
    • Internet-based TOEFL, minimum required score 61
    • Paper-based TOEFL, minimum required score 500

  • Official IELTS Examination, minimum required score 6.0

TOEFL Waiver Requirements:

Freshmen: 4 years of high school where English is the language of instruction in a country where English is a primary language. The TOEFL can also be waived for students who have spent two or more years studying in the U.S. and will graduate from a U.S. high school.


Transfers: 24 hours at an institution where English is the official language, located in a country where English is a primary language.

What are the requirements for admission?

An international applicant is required to meet an equivalent standard for admission, which is based on the US admission criteria. An applicant is classified in one of the following categories based on his/her previous educational background.

  • Freshman - Applicant has not completed any, or has completed six or fewer semester hours, at a post-secondary level institution in which OSU accepts transfer credit.
  • Transfer - Applicant has completed seven or more semester hours of credit at a post-secondary level institution in which OSU accepts transfer credit.
  • Readmission - Applicant has attended classes at OSU and there is a semester break (fall or spring semester only) in enrollment.

Can I apply and not report/submit the university credentials that I have obtained?

No, applicants must submit all educational credentials available at the time of application. All new applicants must disclose their complete educational history on their application that includes all educational programs attended or plan to attend prior to enrollment at OSU. Failure to do so will affect admissibility.

Do you have a probation admission category for international applicants?

Yes, students there are some instances in which international applicants can be admitted on probation:

Freshmen

Freshmen who do not the admission standards posted above may be reviewed by the Admissions Review Committee.  In order to be reviewed by this committee, it is mandatory that you reply to the seven essay questions included in the application for admission.  This committee meets on an as needed basis.  If you have additional questions about the Admission Review Committee, please contact our Coordinator of International Undergraduate Admission at admissions-iss@okstate.edu or +1-405-744-5459.

Transfer

Transfer students who do not meet admission requirements may contact Undergraduate Admissions and request a Transfer Probation Petition. Once the student completes the petition and returns it to Undergraduate Admissions, a decision regarding admission will be made by committee review and the student will be notified of the decision.  Please contact our Coordinator of International Undergraduate Admission at admissions-iss@okstate.edu or +1-405-744-5459 if you need to obtain this petition.

Readmission
A readmission student that leaves the university with a GPA below retention standards will be required to submit a Petition for Readmission with the application for admission. The petition and all supporting documentation will then be sent to the college for review. If the petition is approved, the admission will be considered probationary. What needs to be done to delay admission for a future semester?

An applicant must notify our office, in writing, that they would like to defer their enrollment or application to another semester. Upon receipt of this request, our office will notify the applicant of any further requirements that must be met. Upon receipt of this request, an applicant will be notified via e-mail regarding the status of the request. A valid email address must be provided in order to receive a receipt.

When will my transfer credit evaluation be completed?

The transfer credit evaluations of foreign credentials are completed only after an applicant has been formally admitted to OSU and has notified the Office of Undergraduate Admissions of their plans to enroll at OSU. Applicants should submit course descriptions/syllabi for all courses completed at the post-secondary level when applying to OSU. This will ensure the most accurate evaluation of credit and will eliminate delays in the evaluation process.

Can you send my formal admission package with my I-20 by express mail?

Yes, with an applicant's prepayment of the express mail charges, the Office of International Students and Scholars (ISS) can send documents via express mail. Based on the destination of the package, the cost for express mail varies from US$20.00 to US$45.00. The Office of International Students and Scholars should be contacted for the most current rates.

What application do I submit if I have applied for U.S. Permanent Residency but do not have my Resident Alien Card?

If you have applied for U.S. permanent residency and are awaiting your interview and final approval, your application will be processed through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and pay the domestic application fee of $40.00. The application can be found at http://admissions.okstate.edu. You will need to submit a copy of your EAD card with the (C) (09) Provision of Law listed.

If your permanent residency has been approved (Approval Notice or Permanent Resident Card), you are considered a domestic applicant and will pay the domestic application fee of $40.00. The application can be found at http://admissions.okstate.edu.

Should I apply for housing before I am accepted to OSU?

Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible after they have been accepted to the University. You must be admitted to OSU before you can apply for housing.

Do I have to live on campus?

All unmarried freshmen under 21 years of age are required to live on campus, however, exceptions can be made for several reasons. Details regarding the exceptions can be found on the Residential Life website for answers to your questions regarding housing requirements at OSU.

What scholarships are available for international applicants/students?

For scholarship considerations, applicants need only to submit the Application for Admission to OSU. In order to compete for Freshman scholarships, students must participate in the SAT or ACT examination and an official SAT or ACT Score Report must be sent to OSU. Priority goes to applications received by February 1st for students who are entering OSU in the Fall Semester. Applications received after the deadline will be considered if funds remain available. Students will be notified by Financial Aid, upon acceptance to OSU, if you are granted a scholarship.

When can I enroll?

International applicants that are applying to attend OSU from outside of the U.S. are required to attend an orientation session that is held the week before classes begin in the Fall and Spring semesters. For specific dates regarding Orientation and other important dates, please visit the International Students and Scholars website.

Where can I obtain a copy of the OSU catalog, class schedule or list of majors?

Can I fax or email my application, financial guarantee, academic documents and course descriptions, as attachments, to your office?

We will accept applications and supporting documents being submitted via fax and/or email. However, these documents are not considered official and the original documents will need to be submitted and verified upon arrival for enrollment.

What are the current tuition rates that an International student will pay?

The tuition and fee changes for each academic year are subject to approval by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. The changes for the upcoming Fall semester should be available in July. Information regarding the Estimate of Costs for current year and a Personal Budget Calculation is available on the bursar's website.
